Concept

Workshop Kitchen + Bar is an architectural space dedicated to the great gifts of food, drink, good design and neighborhood. Our approach to our work is thoughtful and fun.

Our kitchen is based around seasonal products from local farms, so the menu changes often; we enjoy the playfulness and creativity in that. Although “Americana” may best describe the style of our food, influences are many. Favorite techniques in the kitchen include our wood-fired pizza oven, wood-fired grill, and custom sous-vide station.
The bar looks mostly to American classics, and focuses on researched ingredients and carefully homemade basics. Original cocktails vary with the market’s availability, Rene’s mood, and tend to rock.

Michael Beckman

Michael Beckman,Chef-Owner

English Lit grad gone culinary, Michael’s ease in four languages parallels a well-travelled and seasoned skill set in the kitchen. Beckman studied at the Paul Bocuse Institute in Lyon, France, and apprenticed at the fourneaux of the 3-star Michelin Lameloise in Burgundy. Chef de partie at Ritz-Carlton’s Vitrum in Berlin, Germany under Chef Thomas Kellermann (Tantris, Munich; Kastell, Hotel Burg Wernberg), Michael has cooked as a private chef in Los Angeles the past several years, where he’s focused on the farmer’s markets of Santa Monica & Hollywood, as well as the city’s burgeoning cocktail culture.

Joseph Mourani,Owner

Successful restaurateur and hospitality guru, Joseph began his career as a civil engineer in Montreal. After apprenticing at “Laperouse” (Paris’ oldest restaurant), he dove head first into Paris’ nightclub scene, apprenticing at the swanky “La Maison Blanche”. Post graduation, Joseph worked as assistant Food and Beverage Manager at the prestigious “Hotel du Crillon”, one of the six palaces of Paris. In 2006, Joseph’s “Myu” bar + restaurant in Beirut gained international acclaim and the press called it “a brainchild of a former engineer.” Since Myu, he has developed and franchised a bubble tea (boba) concept in the Middle East, and launched “Stereo Kitchen” his second architecturally significant restaurant in Beirut.

Architectural Team
Manhattan based Soma Architects took on this project with owners Michael Beckman and Joseph Mourani. First thought: how to realize a contemporary design in a beautiful Colonial building? Our solution was to create a clear contrast through a Modernist insert that follows the rhythm of the space's 27' cathedral ceiling trusses, it's pillars, and 17' high barn-like windows.
A preference for Industrial Chic led us to a language of architectural concrete, black steel, monolithic forms, and classic, earthy Modern tableware.Soma has earned its reputation for innovative, progressive design on a truly international level, with dozens of global projects under its belt and headquarters in NYC, Beirut and Mexico City. Soma Principal Michel Abboud and Partner Leopoldo Sguera are fellow graduates of the Columbia University School of Architecture.
Map Development Principal Michael Perryman has a proven record of excellence in modern building. Based in Manhattan Beach and Palm Desert, Map Development is specialized in high design, with projects throughout the Madison Club, Palm Springs, Beverly Hills, Manhattan Beach, Laguna Beach and more. Michael has worked together with other renowned architects such as San Francisco's Aidlin Darling, and Los Angeles' Xten Architecture.
